Линейные корабли предназначались для совместных боевых действий против кораблей противника. Появление линейного корабля связано с применением линейной тактики ведения морского боя (корабли выстраивались в кильватерную колонну — линию баталии). Первым русским линейным кораблем считается „Полтава", построенная в 1712 г. К середине XIX в. водоизмещение парусных Л.К. достигало 5000 т, вооружение 130 пушек, экипаж 800 человек. Крупным морским сражением с участием парусных линейных кораблей являлся Синопский бой в 1853г. С 1848 г. начинают создаваться парусно-винтовые линейные корабли такие как „Наполеон" (Франция), „Агамемнон" (Англия) и другие. Во 2-й половине XIX в. в связи с применением в морском деле паровых двигателей и винта, а также брони-рования парусные линейные корабли уступают свое место в военных флотах броненосцам. -
